Webkit Turns 10

Mark · Aug 24, 2011 ·

Today is the tenth anniversary of Apple’s open-source WebKit codebase, which powers nearly every relevant web browser and engine used today, including Safari, Chrome, and even WebOS itself.

You can see the first commit to the repository here. It’s worth noting that Apple didn’t announce Safari until Macworld San Francisco 2003, nearly 15 months later, and WebKit wasn’t fully open-source until June 2005.

I was at that Macworld keynote. Hard to believe Safari is just 8 years old.
