Streetmuseum, the Museum of London’s new iPhone app, overlays your iPhone camera with photographs from the past. Tragically, I do not live in London, so I can’t test it. But if it works as advertised, it might be the coolest use of augmented reality I’ve seen on iPhone—at least since Layar told us where our tax dollars were going.
If these screenshots are to be believed, there’s also some impressive technology: whereas most apps just highlight a point of interest with limited precision, this app is presumably scaling the historical image to properly fit your field of vision. (Londoners: please write if that’s not the case.)
I feel like AR has been more gimmicky than not in most applications, but its potential in the education space is enormous, and this app is a great example of that.
